Charles Wesley is almost eaten by an alligator
(Excerpt taken from Hymn Writers Book)

Charles was personal secretary to Gov. Oglethorpe. While in Georgia, nothing seemed to go well for the two brothers. Conditions were crude at best and food was scarce. There is a story that while preparing to bathe in a swampy lake, Charles was almost bitten by an alligator.
